Brown Lemur

Eulemur fulvus

Animal Behavior: The species is arboreal and moves quadrupedally throughout the forest canopy. These lemurs are also capable of leaping and when they do, their long tails assist them in maintaining their balance. This species form multimale-multifemale groups. Group sizes of up to 29 individuals have been observed for brown lemurs. Unlike most lemurs, brown lemurs do not show signs of marked female dominance.

Eating Habits: This species is largely folivorous (leaf eating). It also eats flowers, fruit, and bark.

Range: Common brown lemurs live in social groups of approximately 3 to 12. Their home range is around 17 to 50 acres.

Habitat: Eulemur fulvus is found in Madagascar. They live in scattered forest fragments in the high plateaus of western Madagascar.

Conservation Efforts: The primary threat of brown lemurs is habitat destruction which is partially due to their restricted geographical area. They are placed in a somewhat lower risk category.

Animal Facts: Brown lemurs, like all lemurs, have binocular vision and long furry tails. They have a scent gland at their wrist. Their weight is around 2.6 kg. This is about the size of a house cat. In the fall, there is only one infant born per year to each mother. Average lifespan in the wild is 25 years, while in captivity 35.5 years.
