Tiger

Panthera tigris

Animal Behavior: One of the smallest tiger subspecies, the Malayan tiger is generally solitary. The only long-term relationship is between a mother and her offspring. They are most active at night. Tigers are excellent climbers, using their retractable claws and powerful legs.

Eating Habits: Tigers prefer to hunt at night when their ungulate prey are most active. The majority of the tiger diet consists of various large ungulate species including deer, wild pigs, water buffalo, cattle, horses and goats.

Range: Malayan tigers are native to southeast Asia and the Malayan peninsula.

Conservation Efforts: Tigers of all species are facing critical decline in numbers. There are thought to be about 250 to 340 Malayan tigers remaining in the wild, making them critically endangered. Conservation groups are working with local governments to protest the existing population, and anti-poaching programs are being enacted.

Animal Facts: Malayan tigers can live for up to 20 years. Average litter sizes are 2 to 3 cubs. The Malayan tiger is the national animal of Malaysia and is pictured on the Malaysia Coat of Arms.
