There is more than one way to enjoy The Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo!

Tribute to Shirley the Elephant & Solomon James

If you've visited us lately, there's no doubt that you noticed the life-sized elephant statue located right across from the boat loading area.  Shirley the Elephant was a resident at the LPG&Z for nearly 20 years, before retiring to The Elephant Sanctuary (TES) in Tennessee where she lived the rest of her life.  Solomon James was Shirley's keeper for all 20 years that she was at LPG&Z... and he accompanied Shirley on her adventure to TES, visiting again for Shirley's 70th Birthday!  Solomon passed away in 2021 before this project was completed.
